The Hamilton Hammers (1-5-0-1) showed plenty of fight Wednesday night to open their three-game road trip but came up short in a 4-1 loss to the Toronto Marlies (5-2-0-0) at Coca-Cola Coliseum.
After Toronto built a three-goal lead, Calle Odelius got Hamilton on the board in the second period with his first goal of the season. The Hammers continued to generate chances and looked to cut into the deficit in the third, but Toronto added an empty-net goal late to seal the victory.
Hamilton will look to regroup Friday night when they visit the Laval Rocket in the first half of a back-to-back.
Here’s the breakdown:
THE SUMMARY
Toronto’s Luke Haymes (2) opened the scoring just three minutes into the contest, converting on the power play with Miroslav Holinka and blueliner Ben Danford picking up the assists. Michael Pezzetta (2) doubled the Marlies’ lead by burying a rebound before the midway mark of the frame. Despite the early deficit, Hamilton held a 10-8 edge in shots through 20 minutes.
Aatu Räty (1) extended Toronto’s lead with another power-play goal at 6:21 of the second period, but the Hammers responded just over a minute later. Calle Odelius (1) fired a quick wrist shot from the point to get Hamilton on the board, with Cam Thiesing picking up the assist. Defenceman Ryan Healey nearly added another for Hamilton late in the period after being sprung on a breakaway, but couldn’t convert as Toronto carried a 3-1 advantage into the third.
Hamilton killed off an early Toronto power play to open the final frame before earning a man advantage of its own. The Hammers generated several quality chances but couldn’t find the finish they needed to close the gap. Hamilton continued to push for another goal, but Toronto’s Marc Johnstone sealed the 4-1 victory with an empty-net tally late in the contest.
BETWEEN THE PIPES
Wednesday’s matchup saw both goaltenders face a steady workload, with Toronto’s Samuel Hlavaj earning his third win of the season after turning aside 26 of 27 shots. Hlavaj entered the contest with a 3.01 goals-against average and a .870 save percentage through his first three starts.
At the other end, Vitek Vanecek stopped 26 of 29 shots for Hamilton. The netminder entered the game with a 3.79 goals-against average across four appearances and kept the Hammers within reach as they looked to generate some offence.
ODELIUS FINDS THE BACK OF THE NET
Calle Odelius opened his scoring account for the season in the second period Wednesday. The 22-year-old defenceman recorded two goals and 14 assists across 82 games with Bridgeport across the previous two seasons. His latest marker was the third of his AHL career as he looks to take another step forward this season.
